Vehicle tracking

What to look for in a vehicle tracking system

Hands using a GPS map app on a smartphone

A tracking system should do more than put a dot on a map. Done well, it helps you answer everyday questions quickly: where is that vehicle, was it used when it should not have been, and how much time is being lost? Here is what to check before you choose one.

Reliable location updates

The basics must be dependable. Ask how often positions update, what happens when a vehicle drives through an area with poor signal, and whether the data is stored and sent once the connection returns.

Alerts that matter

Useful alerts tell you about real problems without burying you in noise. Look for alerts such as:

  • The vehicle moving outside working hours.
  • The vehicle entering or leaving an area you define.
  • Long idling.
  • Ignition on or off.
  • The device losing power or being tampered with.

Reports you will actually use

Trip history, stops, distance travelled and how long each vehicle is working are the reports most fleets rely on. Choose a system whose reports are easy to read, so decisions are quick and not buried in spreadsheets.

Quality hardware and professional installation

A good device badly installed gives bad data. Poor wiring can cause lost power, false alerts and failures at the worst moment. Professional installation, with tidy wiring and a hidden, protected position for the device, matters as much as the device itself.

Add-ons when you need them

Tracking becomes more powerful when paired with the right extras. Fuel monitoring helps you see where fuel goes. Dashcams give you evidence when something happens on the road. Immobilisers help protect a vehicle from theft. You do not need every add-on on every vehicle, so match them to the risk.

Support close to you

Things go wrong with any equipment. Choose a supplier who is easy to reach, who can fix a faulty device quickly and who stands behind the installation.

Questions to ask any supplier

  • Who installs the devices, and how?
  • What happens if a device stops reporting?
  • What costs come after the device itself?
  • Who owns the data, and how long is it kept?
  • Can the system grow with my fleet?
